LOOKING AHEAD TO 2019

Artemis Korkidis standing on Greenwich Ave wearing Theory

t w e n t y n i n e t e e n

Last year I wrote and created 152 blog posts for THE GIRL LOOK BOOK. I was actually pretty surprised by this number and when I started counting I thought it was going to be much less. On this day last year I remember thinking, “This year is going to be IT, I’m going do it, I’m going to become a blogger.” I decided to put everything I had, EVERY single extra moment I had (and even the ones I didn’t have) into this blog. There were multiple reasons why. The biggest one was the fulfillment I got every single time I hit the “publish” button. This was MY space. it didn’t belong to my boss and it didn’t belong to my family. It was a place that I owned all on my own, a sacred space where I could share my dreams, my life, my aspirations, and most importantly a place for me to inspire. The second reason was the more practical one. I was tired of retail. I had worked in essentially the same job for 10 years and it was time for me to move on and to grow. At the beginning of 2018 I was committed to going off on my own because I felt there was no other option. It was make this work or live a life where I only saw my kids, my husband, and my friends on the weekends and we never shared the same schedule. There was only one problem. I was walking away from stability and into the unknown. It also meant taking a huge leap of faith in myself and my potential. The losses would be my own but so would the wins. I’m a dreamer by nature but over the years I’ve also become more practical ( I have my husband to thank for that!). So for the next 6 months I prepared for the next step.

July 1st was the first day of my new life. I’m going to do a blog post dedicated to the other non-blogger part of my business. Saying you’re a stylist can mean so many different things to different people. I get asked a lot about what it means and how it works, so look out for a post about that at the end of the month. For now I want to focus on this space. What I want to grow and what I want to stay the same in 2019. If I’m being honest, its tough out there! Its tough to know what you like and what you want to see more of especially on social media. I find judging my success on likes and comments on a post to be difficult and probably inaccurate. 2018 has mostly been a game of trial and error, going with my gut, and responding to direct message requests on Instagram. I can also be really tough on myself especially when it comes to photos of me. Some might say i’m in the wrong business! This year I want to focus on the small wins and not dwell on the misses. Here are a few focuses for 2019:

YouTube

I’m putting this at the top of my list because my number one dream” item on my list for the blog in 2019. That being said there are a few housekeeping items I’ll need to do first but my goal for the new year is to publish at least 4 style videos (one for each season).

Pinterest

Half way through last year I started to feel a little uninspired. I was constantly working and not taking anytime to recharge my mind. Before kids I used to flip through magazines and style sections but those days are gone. I rediscovered Pinterest and I love it! It has really helped me get the creative juices flowing when I feel like I’m in a rut. Its also a place where I organize my thoughts.

Fashion

This year I want to be more transparent about the clothes that I’m wearing. In the past year I have had to significantly change the way I look at my closet. In my pre-Instagram days I was the “investor”, still wearing pieces that I splurged on in High School and college. In Europe, clothes are so much more expensive. Every summer I would buy one or two pieces and wear them for years. Becoming a blogger changed everything. Again, I want to do a bigger post on this, but one of the ways bloggers make money is through affiliate links on our websites and through Instagram. If the clothing we’re wearing is old or no longer available you can’t sell it. This posed quite an issue for me as I wasn’t used to shopping SO much! I had to change my mindset (and my husband’s) and look at things differently. For 2019 my goal is to invest in fewer pieces at the beginning of the season and wear them longer and in more ways. Back to my roots you can say! Also there are three ways I get new clothing: purchase, gifted by a brand, or borrowed from a brand for a shoot. Look out for these mentions in every post moving forward!

Styling

As I mentioned above there will be a post on what being a stylist means to me and what I actually DO! I would like to show more of this world but it can be tough because the majority of my clients are private people. I would never betray their trust by putting their homes or lives on social media or on my blog. That being said I’m going to make it a point to ask more because I have recently had a few clients say they’d be open to it.

Lastly I want to thank you, my readers, from the bottom of my heart. Your messages, your likes, and your support means the world to me. I feel so lucky to have this space and that I get to call this my job. I love hearing from you and my mailbox is always open!

LEOPARD IS THE NEW NEUTRAL

Dec18Artemis-36.jpg
Dec18Artemis-39.jpg

Leopard is a neutral. There, I said it. No but really think about it….black, browns, tans, and ivory. NEUTRAL! Someone once told me that blondes should never wear leopard. I then showed him a pic of my forever fashion and style inspiration, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, case closed:) There is definitely a way to tastefully wear animal prints. To prevent a fashion misstep, I always suggest limiting yourself to one piece at a time and pairing it back to a monochromatic look. For something more casual, I always suggest denim. I can’t wait to wear this coat back to a white tee and jeans in the Spring! If you’re looking for leopard in a different color palette I love this gray version. Also this pale snow leopard style would be perfect for New Year’s Eve over a sparkly dress or a creamy cashmere sweater. Need help styling your animal print? Send me a note!

LAST MINUTE GIFTS FROM AMAZON

Dec4Artemis-43.jpg

Today is the last day to order from Amazon and receive your gift in time for Christmas! I rounded up some of my favorites that are prime eligible for all the people in your life. We use Amazon throughout the entire year for the essentials but I never realized how many other specialty items they have available until this month. My go-to will always be shopping from local businesses but in a pinch its great to know that these gifts are available. I ordered three of the travel chargers today! One for my brother-in-law, one for Luke’s Godfather, and one for me!

Happy shopping!

NEW YEAR'S IN LACE

Dec4Artemis-92.jpg

HOLIDAY LACE

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find a dress that you can wear for Christmas and New Year’s Eve? I love these lace styles because you can easily change out the accessories for a different look. Suede or velvet pumps and grosgrain wrapped earrings for Christmas and add a little more sparkle on the 31st. I couldn’t find the exact dress I’m wearing online but tagged similar styles from the same brand. I actually found them on Amazon which means you have three more days to order with free 2-day shipping and receive by Monday. Other last minute items I’m loving from Amazon:

  • This travel blanket scarf is my favorite. So cozy!

  • I purchased this wireless and waterproof speaker for my 15 year old nephew!

  • One of my favorite oils to diffuse in our house - great any time of the year. Here is my diffuser. Honestly its become a routine in our house and someone puts it on every night!

  • My all time favorite interior designer. This coffee table book is on my list! I have this one and love it.

  • My Celine sunglasses for a over 50% off! Love this style:)

A LITTLE HOLIDAY SPARKLE

IMG_0879.JPG

SHOP THE POST

Only 8 sleeps till the big guy comes! Are you ready? I feel like everyone keeps asking that on social media and honestly, I’m usually not completely done until a day or two before Christmas Eve. Frank and I just went through the list of all of our family members and friends that we need gifts for and realized we still need to do a good amount of shopping for the boys! Its hard because they already have so many toys and Luke’s birthday is January 2nd. Last year the amount of gifts he received was so overwhelming that we’re trying to think of an alternative this year. One thought was to save half of his presents for a little half birthday celebration in the summer. I would love suggestions if anyone is in a similar situation with a holiday birthday!

  • I love these gold loafers! They’re a perfect touch of gold and they don’t feel overly holiday that you wouldn’t want to wear them past December.

  • I have this thing for clip-on earrings. it reminds me of my Belgian Grandmother. These are gorgeous.

  • If you’re looking for a fun pair of holiday earrings and are on a budget, THIS under $50 oversized pair is so pretty!

orchard mile

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now you know, I love my community! Even more than that I love supporting local businesses and stores. So when I found out that one of my favorite online retailers was doing a pop-up in Greenwich I was VERY excited. I discovered Orchard Mile about two years ago when I was looking for a Rachel Zoe tunic that was sold out EVERYWHERE! I had almost given up and then there it was….in every size! When I think of Orchard Mile I think of a marketplace filled with all of my favorite brands and their entire assortment for the season. What makes Orchard Mile different from other online retailers is that they don’t pick and choose a buy every season, they offer it ALL. This has really come in handy for me as a stylist as I’m always on the hunt for my clients. Now you might say that this would be and overwhelming way to shop, but its actually the contrary. Orchard Mile created my mile which allows you to create your own shopping experience on a virtual “street” curated for you, by you! Check out my pics from the Greenwich pop-up plus a round up of my pics from Orchard Mile online.

  • Just found this blouse from the same designer on sale. I love the sleeve detail and the fact that you can wear it casually for work or dressy at night. You can also see it styled here back to denim!

  • If you’re looking for a cocktail dress for Christmas Eve or New Year’s eve this ivory one is so pretty. It could also double as the perfect baby shower guest dress or for any other religious events when you may want to have a longer sleeve.

GET THE LOOK

Happy Monday, cyber Monday! Is it just me or did Thursday to Sunday feel like a very long stretch? We had a great time getting things done around the house, seeing friends and family, and enjoying “no plans” plans! I posted two sale posts which you can still shop - here for Black Friday and here to shop the small businesses I love. Today is the day I’m really going to hunker down and start shopping. This may sound crazy but even I get overwhelmed shopping for myself on big sale days. What I started doing last year that helped me so much was making a list. I really felt more organized and less stressed!

  • Love these slippers for the perfect stocking stuffer! They’re a great steal version of an identical more pricey version and these are $12!!!

  • This is my favorite home site and today only its 30% off!!! Literally unheard of. You can shop my favorites in the Black Friday post.

  • This espresso maker is on my list. And the color!!! So chic!

  • LOVE these flannel PJs and the entire site is 25% off with code BIGDAY

  • This neutral under $100 sweater is so versatile and 30% off for cyber Monday!

  • The diffuser that I use EVERYDAY is 30% off and free shipping. Debating getting another one for the boys room!

  • I just bought this sweater on sale and today its an extra $50 off today! Love the color:)

Happy Monday and Happy shopping!

FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING

The one gift everyone in my family will be receiving this year? A ChappyWrap blanket! I was given my first ChappyWrap at a luncheon a couple of months ago and after a week with it at home, my family was hooked! Not only are they extremely soft and cozy, they’re also machine washable and so easy to take car of. We’ve already taken ours to the beach, on a road trip, and we recently threw it on top of the boys for a Thanksgiving morning walk. They are the perfect gift for everyone on your list but I think they’re especially great for a college dorm room (which is why my niece will be getting one!). We also used a ChappyWrap for our holiday card shoot:)

FROM DESK TO DINNER - THE PERFECT BLACK DRESS

DSC_1820.jpg

SHOP THE POST

Taking a break from holiday gift guides to share this versatile look. I jokingly posted on Instagram last night that my dream job would be anything that I could wear this dress “from desk to dinner”. I love it in Fall’s warmer temps with pumps and later I’ll be pairing it with black opaque tights and black suede booties.

In other news…the Black Friday/cyber sales have already begun! I don’t know how I feel about them all launching so early. Not the biggest fan of that happening before turkey day. Thoughts? It puts the pressure on especially if you’re the one cooking! If you’re looking for a less expensive version of today’s dress I found this pretty style for 25% off. I’ll be posting ALL my favorite sales on the blog tomorrow. Stay tuned!

THE GIFT GUIDE - gifts for him

giftguide18-hubby.png

Collaboration ALERT! I’m so excited for today’s Gift Guide because it was created by a special guest blogger (hehe) my husband Frank! When I started working on this year’s holiday shopping round ups I decided there were a few that I wanted to call on an expert for (click here for the tween - my 18 year old niece weighed in!). When I worked for Ralph Lauren it was so easy to shop for the men in my life and all my gifts were always a home run. Now that I’m out of “retail” I need to be a little more creative and honestly, more thoughtful. Its hard to not get sucked into the “standard” man gifts, i.e. gloves, flasks, slippers. When Frank sent me his picks I asked him, “seriously, would you want this?” and he said yes to everything! I think the key is finding pieces that feel different and curated. There were a couple of pieces that I liked but didn’t make the cut so rest assured this is an authentic “man” roundup! One of my favorite stocking stuffers is this soap. It smells amazing - also check out this after shave cream from the same brand.

I love today’s collab and I hope you do too. Also side note: now I know what to get Frank for Christmas:)

I could have made this gift guide over 100 items!!! Love shopping for BOY presents:) This gift guide is a combination of Luke’s favorite things and some items on our wishlist for the boys this year. This sweeping/cleaning set has resulted in hours of self-play and recently Harry has loved this pushing this shopping cart around. This is one of my go-to sites for finding interesting toys and home items for kids and babies. They also have great parenting articles. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for boys (and girls) and actually adults love these too…click here. You can NEVER have enough!
